What’s in My Backpack: Hiking Essentials for Every Adventure

One of the questions I get asked most often is “What do you pack in your backpack?” The truth is — it depends. My packing list changes depending on the hike I’m doing: the route, distance, time of year, and how long I’m expecting to be out on the trail. But whether it’s a local day walk, a long-distance challenge, or a camping adventure, there are some essentials I always keep close. Here’s a look at what I typically pack.

Local Day Hike

For shorter, local walks, I like to travel light but still be prepared. In my 23L or 30L backpack, I’ll usually carry:

• Tripod & bluetooth clicker (fully charged)

• Seat mat

• Waterproof jacket and a warm layer

• Power bank and head torch (both fully charged)

• Water and snacks

• A bit of money (just in case a pub or café stop calls my name!)

This setup keeps my bag light but ensures I’ve got the basics covered for a safe and enjoyable hike.

Longer Day Hike (25+ miles)

When I know I’ll be out for a long-distance hike, I pack everything above, plus a few extras to make sure I’m comfortable all day:

• More snacks (fuel is everything on big walks!)

• Extra water plus a water filter

• Plasters and basic first aid essentials

• A change of socks

• Spare trousers (if I’m setting off in shorts)

Being prepared for changes in weather or unexpected blisters makes a massive difference on longer hikes.

Camping or Thru-Hike

For overnight trips or multi-day adventures, my pack switches to my 46L Osprey backpack, and I add camping gear on top of my usual essentials:

• Tent

• Sleeping mat

• Sleeping bag + sleeping bag liner

• Extra warm layer

• Jetboil for hot drinks and meals

• Dehydrated meals or porridge sachets

• Mug, spoon, and fork

This setup gives me everything I need to stay warm, fuelled, and comfortable while spending nights under the stars.

Final Thoughts

Packing for a hike is all about being prepared without overloading yourself. For me, the goal is to balance comfort, safety, and practicality — whether it’s a quick morning walk or a multi-day trek. The more I hike, the more I refine my kit, but these staples never let me down.
